Understanding the FCC White Space Decision

The following outline pertains to United States television band whitespace as proposed and adopted by the U.S. Federal Communications Commison on November 4, 2008

Devices will operate in UHF channels 21-51

Wide area coverage for less base station cost

Multiplexed multi-frequency radios can provide coverage

Must be non-disruptive

Must include locator technology with auto-shut off

Challenges DSL providers not offering naked DSL

Offers rural coverage as well as metropolitan service

Can bring broadband to previously unserviced areas

IEEE proposes use of IP-based broadband wireless protocols to address many of the applications needs in the Television White Space (TVWS) frequencies (reference)
